Docs to Dialogue
Turning everyday notes into AI-generated podcasts for richer async communication.
Summary
This lab project explores how to turn internal documentation—project notes, reflections, critiques—into shareable audio content powered by AI.
Instead of traditional reports or slide decks, this workflow produces podcast-style summaries from working documents using LLMs. These audio narratives make it easier to keep teammates, cross-functional partners, and stakeholders informed in a more human, digestible format.
Whether the notes live in Markdown, .txt files, Confluence pages, or a quick write-up in OneNote, the goal is the same: keep documenting as you work, then turn that raw material into compelling, voice-ready content.
The Problem
Project documentation often ends up underutilized. Design decisions, team reflections, and hard-earned learnings get buried in files or scattered across platforms.
- Context gets lost over time
- Stakeholders stay out of sync
- Valuable thinking rarely reaches beyond the immediate team
And traditional formats like decks or status docs don't always land—especially in async or hybrid environments where attention is split.
The Idea
What if your documentation could talk back to you?
This project reimagines internal documentation as a dynamic, audio-first medium. Instead of writing up summaries or relying on long-form documents to communicate progress, I use NotebookLM to convert my existing notes—whether from a Markdown file, .txt log, or Confluence export—into short-form AI-generated podcasts.
Here's the key shift:
I'm not scripting or editing anything manually. I simply upload the raw material, add a focused prompt—like "Summarize the key insights from this design sprint" or "Give me a recap of all blockers and decisions made this week"—and NotebookLM returns a fully generated spoken audio file.
This transforms documentation from a passive archive into an active communication tool—one that is fast, engaging, and well-suited for async, cross-functional environments.
How It Works
- 📥 1. Upload Notes & Logs
I collect documentation across formats—Markdown, .txt, Confluence exports—and drop it into NotebookLM. - 🎯 2. Add a Prompt
I provide a focused prompt to steer the summary. For example:
"Generate a 3-minute podcast summarizing this week's design decisions, trade-offs, and any open questions." - 🔊 3. Audio Podcast Output
NotebookLM directly generates a spoken audio summary, ready to play and share—no extra scripting, editing, or voiceover needed.
Use Cases
- 🎧 Weekly Team Recaps
Instead of meeting notes or Slack threads, I generate a short podcast that recaps what shipped, what stalled, and why. - 📣 Stakeholder Briefings
Raw project documentation becomes an audio-ready update—perfect for async listening and status alignment. - 🧠 Reflection Logs
Personal or design reflections turn into voice memos I can archive, review, or share with mentors and collaborators.
Why This Matters
AI is redefining how we share and absorb information. This workflow proves that documentation doesn't have to be static—it can be audio-first, dynamic, and deeply human.
By using NotebookLM to create podcasts directly from notes, I've made async updates feel more engaging, more accessible, and much easier to consume—without adding any friction to my workflow.
